FIRST FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 5TH 2008 - THE LONESOMES $5.00@ the door
Urban Americana that travels Wilco's sidewalks on an old Schwinn cruiser." -- Allison Picard, Lucky Duck Productions

Five stars . . . Small Town Stories & Big, Beautiful Sounds . . . this is the sound of a songwriter - a storyteller - and a band hitting their stride. The record follows small-town folks through their beat patrols and bus rides, crossroads and milestones, as the shadow of war hangs just on the edges of the frame distorting and corrupting from the outside in. The tunes move seamlessly from Crazy Horse rock-ups to the sweet and ethereal vibe of MMJ - always honestly and soulfully. You'll be discovering and re-discovering resonant moments from this record with every new listen.

FRIDAY SEPEMBER 12TH 2008 - CURTIS MONET $5.00 @ the door
Curtis's story began on the beaches of San Diego. The son of a Navy Captain, he spent his younger years traveling the country, never staying in one place for long. Music claimed his life at age 8 when he acquired a sax and started exploring the musical scenes of Athens, New Orleans, New York, and Philadelphia. At age 10 he was given an old, cracked acoustic guitar and taught himself to play Bob Marley, Grateful Dead, and Led Zeppelin tunes. Throughout his teen years he played local bars & coffee houses armed with his acoustic guitar and a room full of friends. He made regular appearances with local east coast funk & rock bands, as well as concocting his own musical experiments along the way. His journey now rests in Corvallis, OR where he is studying Music Composition & Business Management at Oregon State University. You can see Curtis playing throughout the NW in such local acts as The Badfish Band, Stairway Denied, & DSP.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 13TH 2008 - MOO-GOT-2 $7.00 @ the door
Moo-got-2 is

Aaron Drago - Bass

Mike Solomon - Guitar

Tomek- Keys

Brian Swizlo –Keys

Darin Mitchell - Drums and Vocals

Lucas Hieronymus- percussion

Chris Noonan-saxaphone

Labeled as one of humboldt countys most prominent party/club dance bands Moo-Got-2 has been creating quite the buzz.
With their infectious dance grooves and booty shaking rhythms from start to finish,
the band flows effortlessly into a frenzy of
funk and rock reminiscent of bands like Galactic, Ween and the Motet. They also have
a lot psychedelic moments similar to STS9, Phish and the Disco Biscuits. The great
thing about this band is they have their own twist to the jamband element that is
unpredictable and exciting. The audience is always paying attention to this and
continuously egging the band on. In short Moo-Got-2 is all about fun. The have a great ability to take a simple funk tune and write lyrics that tell
stories. They play to the crowd very well night after night blending many
different styles such as funk, rock, reggae and latin into an eclectic mix. The percussion player of the group Lucas Hieronynus has added a new percussion palette to
the band that seems to sync very well with the collective sound. His latin and
samba influences round out the groups dynamic funk and rock structures. The band
has a great sense of being able to improvise in the moment and take a song to a
new place each time they perform it. Keyboardist Tomek Zajaczkowski continues
throughout the night to keep the music moving with his simple yet effective
melodic brushes that offer a nice contrast to Guitarist Mike Solomon's leads and
rhythms. Bassist Aaron Drago continues song after song to hold the whole thing
together with catchy bass runs and funky syncopation. He is definitely the glue
that binds this powerful funk machine. Darin Mitchell is keeping a trancy
back-beat that keeps everyone dancing without fail. He also does a majority of
the singing in the group, not an easy task for such an energetic and lively
drummer.
In the winter of '07 long time friend , very talented and original saxaphonist in the band Chris Noonan was invited to the band to play and Moo-Got-2 was complete…..or so they thought……after a run with another Humboldt county band and good friends Nucleus, the very funky Brian Swizlo asked about possibly doing some shows with moo-got-2 as a 2nd keyboardist to accent tomeks already pychedelic style and add more to what he thought was already a fine blend….After close consideration and a few very rocking shows the guys agreed that “Swiz” just might be the final missing link to the already very funky puzzle, and decided to give it a whirl for the summer of 08…….We will see where it goes from here but so far so good.

SUNDAY SEPEMBER 14TH 2008 - ROOTZ UNDERGROUND $10.00 at the door
Revolution reggae music - edgy, raw, natural, roots... They are Rootz Underground. That is their sound.

Since their start in 2000, performing at live jam sessions in Kingston, Jamaica at Harry's bar, to RE Unplugged at Weekendz and then becoming the main act at Mystic Urchin's Tuesday Nite Live at Village, Rootz Underground have gained notoriety for their live performances. The group performed live for five years before beginning the recording process for their debut release MOVEMENT. The band has had the opportunity to perform at such Jamaican festivals such as Reggae Sumfest, Welcome To Jamrock, the Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival and Flashpoint Film Festival.

Upcoming U.S. shows include the Ragga Muffins Festival in Long Beach at the Long Beach Arena in California February 16th, the opening slot for Midnite on February 24th at The Mystic Theater in Petaluma, California and the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival in Mendocino County, California in late June 2008. Their first U.S festival appearance was at the 2007 Monterey Bay Reggae Festival. The future brings a wide breadth of opportunities for Rootz Underground, and listeners will find a refreshing concept from a group capable to translate and broaden the scope of reggae in the modern context.

The six-member group unites Stevie G Newland (lead singer), Charles Lazarus (lead guitar), Jeffrey Moss-Solomon (rhythm guitar), Colin Young (bass guitar), Paul Smith (keyboard) and Leon Campbell (drummer) to form a revolutionary roots, rock, reggae band.

Rootz Underground built its live show and readied the songs for MOVEMENT after the tremendous response they received from their community. Their shows rapidly became an institution in Kingston and throughout Jamaica. The group developed a fan base that was fertile for this growing “reggae rock" music scene that has now taken "root" in Jamaica. Employing the dynamic combination of a contemporary roots, rock sound, universal messages and energetic and compelling stage shows, Rootz Underground goes beyond a niche definition - reaching across reggae boundaries into pop music realms.

MOVEMENT has benefited from a sophisticated team crafting some of the greatest recordings in reggae today. Each track of this 19-song set tells a vivid, nuanced story with moody - Jazz influenced guitar solos, nimble keyboards, ethereal segues, delay effects, traditional African/Jamaican hand drums, razor sharp mixing and call and response chorus vocals that find members harmonizing in agreement with the lyrical message. A rich sound, full of careful layers, serves as a comfortable bed for some of the most universal and honest lyrics to rest in a reggae mix. This sound doesn't rest alone in the reggae genre, the songs have a serious rock music sensibility with breakdowns into hard-hitting grooves, intense builds and smooth transitions back to the one-drop reggae rhythm. The album’s use of interesting vignettes takes us into the realm of the underground and beyond to position ourselves in the movement for a closer listen.

First released to radio and as a video is the compelling VICTIMS OF THE SYSTEM, produced by Wayne Armond (as is the lion’s share of the record) that preps us for the mindset of a modern Jamaican “underground” twenty-something. The current single and companion video for HAMMER features the production talents of Bobby Digital, an influential reggae and dance hall producer. The dreamy TIME IS AN ILLUSION is produced by Rory Gilligan of the legendary Stone Love sound system who makes memories of dancehalls past come to life on the album intro vignette taken from a 1990’s session shout out that introduces the 19-song set like a night on the town that lasts through the wee hours until dawn.

The lead singer Stevie G has an urgent and focused stage presence reminiscent of Bob Marley in its reverent passion and plaintive, sincere delivery. But the fact that he shares vocal duties with other members and takes an ensemble role makes him stand out from the “front man” role in the reggae genre, stating his message with the energy of the group and the compositions at the forefront of the mission. The group members share the stage with timely instrumental solos or choreographed dance and vocal portions from other members forming an integral part of the Rootz Underground show.

At no other time in the history of reggae have its players been so widely accepted as the present. People from cultures all over the world look to the music and message of Bob Marley and the Wailers for sustenance, enjoying the standards of reggae excellence. Artists and bands such as Sean Paul, Damian Marley, Morgan Heritage, Culture, and Burning Spear tour continents filling stadiums and selling out festivals devoted to this revolutionary art form.

Now the younger generation has decided to take up their "arms" and come as warriors with words, sound and power to hip clubs in Kingston and subsequently to radio, TV and festival stages outside their island of Jamrock. The band members of Rootz Underground have been schooled in the institutions of higher learning and mentored by present-day musicians and producers in Jamaica. Their signature sound is inspired both Bob Marley's contemporaries in '70's traditional rock as well as modern giants in pop music.

Like the founders of reggae and their offspring who fuse elements of traditional reggae and ska, R&B, Jazz, Latin, rock and then punk rock, Rootz Underground uses elements of revolutionary Rasta-influenced reggae, trance, rock, Jazz, and dub to forge a modern reggae rock sound. Reggae afficionados, critics, promoters and DJ's alike concur that Rootz Underground is a group that can make an impact as large as their predecessors in ensemble reggae recording and song writing, inviting comparisons to bands such as Midnite, Steel Pulse, Black Uhuru, Third World, and the legendary Wailers.

Many of the finest musicians in reggae are found on stages and in the studio as "backing bands" for touring artists. What this meant around the turn of the millennium was limited live music scene in reggae's homeland of Jamaica. Musicians would assemble in order to record music or back other artists, or perform recording session work for popular rhythms that multiple artists record over. The vacuum created by this tendency set the stage for the rise of Rootz Underground as a band whose originals present a fresh sound and paint a vivid canvas for the future of Jamaican music.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 20TH 2008 - THE MELODIANS $15.00 @ the door
The Melodians are one of Jamaica's greatest Rocksteady groups, cutting a series of classic singles during the late '60s and early '70s that included the internationally famed "Rivers of Babylon" and "Sweet Sensation." In 1966, when driving rhythms of ska were abandoned in favor of the slower, more soulful Rocksteady, Jamaican performers discovered a freedom of expression they had previously been denied. In overcoming the limitations of ska the dawn of the Rocksteady age begun. .A few groups rose to notoriety with none more popular than The Melodians.
The group was formed in the Greenwich Town area of Kingston in 1965 by Tony Brevett (brother of Skatalites bassist Lloyd Brevett), Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton. Close friend, Renford Cogle.assisted with writing and arranging material. In 1966 The Melodians made their recording debut with Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's Studio One label with the releases "Lay It On". "Meet Me", "I Should Have Made It Up" and "Let's Join Hands (Together)" Early in 1967, The Melodians moved over to Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label recording successfull hits "You Have Caught Me," "Expo 67," "I'll Get Along Without You," "You Don't Need Me" (which featured U-Roy), and "Come On Little Girl". These recordings established them as the sweetest-sounding vocal trios on the Rocksteady circuit. In 1968,over a financial dispute with Reid The Melodians left Treasure Isle and joined up with producer Sonia Pottinger releasing two more hits, "Little Nut Tree" and "Swing and Dine."

Eager to exert more control over their destiny, the trio joined fellow artists, The Gaylads, Delroy Wilson and Ken Boothe, in launching the Links Label. Although their resulting release on the label, "Sweet Rose", "It Comes and Goes" were popular, internal disputes among the artists resulted in the demise of Links records.

Late in 1968, the trio joined Winston Lowe's newly launched "Tramp" label, where they continued to supervise and produce their own material, which included "When There Is You", "Ring Of Gold", "You've Got It" and "Personally Speaking". They also found time to record one-off sessions for both Sonia Pottinger and Coxsone Dodd before returning to work with Reid early the following year, cutting a number of titles the most notable being, "Everybody Bawlin’"

In 1969, The Melodians began recording for producer Leslie Kong breaking through to a wider international audience releasing some of the most highly acclaimed smash hits such as. "Sweet Sensation" "Rivers of Babylon," of which became the group's signature tune. "Rivers of Babylon”, whose lyrics quoted parables from psalms 137 also marked the emergence of Rastafarian spiritual consciousness in the group's songwriting of which was also revered in a later realease "Black Man Kingdom Come." “Rivers of Babylon", was copied by Bony M, who enjoyed international success scoring over a million sales and becoming the second highest selling single in the UK in 1978.

Other successful releases with Kong included "It's My Delight", which was issued by Trojan in the UK (where it reached the UK pop chart, in January 1970) "A Day Seems So Long", "Say Darling Say", and "It Took A Miracle." However, in August 1971 the Jamaican music industry lost one of its finest talents when Kong, who still at the height of his success suffered a fatal heart attack

Despite the shock, the group overcame the tragedy to record some of their finest material, which included the Tony Brevett-produced "This Beautiful Land" (featured on the history of trojan vol.2, cdtal-900). They also worked with a series of local producers, returning to Pottinger once again to cut two medleys of their old hits "The Sensational Melodians" and "The Mighty Melodians", and later worked with Sid Bucknor releasing "In Our Time”, Warrick Lyn "You Are My Only Love", Lee Perry "Round and Round" and N.E.Williams "Your Turn To Cry.”

Towards the end of 1972, the trio returned to work with Duke Reid for a last time to record "Passion Love" and "Love Makes The World Go Around" and also reunited with Sonia Pottinger yet again to cut "Black Man Kingdom Come". In 1973 Dowe left the group, despite "Rivers of Babylon" finding a whole new audience via its inclusion on Jimmy Cliff's soundtrack for The Harder They Come, The Melodians disbanded.. Dowe and Brevett both went on to record solo singles. Brevett, had already recorded material without the group, including "You Took Me By Surprise" for Martin Riley, the Bunny Lee-produced "Don't Give Up", and a number of self-produced singles, most notably "Don't Get Weary", "Over Hills and Valleys", "So Ashamed" and "Black Girl". Following the break-up of The Melodians, Brevett cut a series of excellent singles, "Words of Prophesy" for Israel Rockers label, "Star Light" for Planit, along with "I've Got To Get Back Home" and an updated version of "Over Hills and Valleys" for Vivian 'yabby u' Jackson. Meanwhile, Dowe, who had previously cut solo sides for Byron Smith and Leslie Kong, proved even more prolific, recording a number of popular singles for Pottinger, resulting in his debut album, Build Me Up, issued early in 1974. Over the next few years, Dowe continued to work with Pottinger as well as recording "Down Here In Babylon" for Pauline Morrison, a re-make of "Your Turn To Cry" for Prince Tony Robinson and "Things You Say You Love" and "Come On Pretty Woman", both issued on the Virgonian label. Like Brevett, he also produced a number of his own recordings, most notably, "A Deh Pon Di Wicked", "No Sweeter Way" and "Unfaithful Mankind."

Throughout the remainder of the 70’s, Brevett, Dowe and McNaughton occasionally re-formed to record, with their collaborations including "Dry Up Yuh Tears", "What Am I To Do", "It's All In The Family" and a version of the drifters "I'll Take You Where The Music's Playing" for Pottinger, and "Why Little Girl" along with remake of "Passion Love" for Channel One. Other releases bearing their name included "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying" and an updated version of "Swing and Dine" for Harry J”s (Harry Johnson), a Vivian Jackson-produced single, "Stop You Gang War" B/W "Learn to Love One Another" and three singles issued on the Studio One Label: "Burning Fire", "Loving Feeling" and an updated version of "Little Nut Tree". In 1983 the trio re-formed and recorded the album, Irie Feelings for Ras Records, who also issued "Warning" "Push a Little Harder" as a single. That same year UB40 covered "Sweet Sensation" on their hit Labour of Love album.

In 1992 they recorded "Song of Love"—issued on the Tappa Zukie Label. Throughout the later 90’s they continued touring internationally, performing their classic hits.as well debuting appearance at The Sierra Nevada World Music Festival in California in 2002. In November 2005 The Melodians embarked on a successfull West Coast Tour.

On the evening of Saturday January 28, 2006 after a rehearsal in preparation for a performance to take place the following weekend at the Jamaican Prime Minister’s residence, Brent Dowe, at the age of 59 suffered a fatal heart attack. The remaining original members Tony Brevett and Trevor McNaughton.have continued touring in Europe and the US as well as recording in honor of Brent Dowe.

The Melodians are in the process of releasing a new album with producer Willie Lindo on a major Label. With the release of the new album they will be touring cross the US and Europe.

THURSDAY SPTEMBER 25TH 2008 - BARRY HAMPTON and the TRIPLE GRIP $7.00 at the doo
Rediviva presents a very special evening with BARRY HAMPTON and the TRIPLE GRIP. Born and raised in Baltimore, MD. Spent my formative musical years (10-15) in the small town of Bethlehem, PA. where the 60's and 70's funk and soul from the city had been fused with 80's breaking, heavy metal, gheri curl swing, and thriller. Soaking up all things with a beat, I felt that soul was not limited to one style of anything. After all, the day of my first gig in 1982, I rocked the same pair of parachute pants for the metal band I sang with and the B-Boy battle an hour later. (I took 2nd place..) Having this outlook forced me to fight my way through to this, my musical style. Dig it...
